Spring Is Finally Here: How To Prepare Your Storage Unit For The Weather Change
Posted on: 6 April 2018
If you have some of your belongings in storage, you might not have made it out to the storage unit during the winter. Now that the weather is warming up, you'll need to give your belongings some much-needed attention. You see, the warmer weather will be bringing some potential issues with it; these issues could combine to cause damage to the items you have in storage. To make sure your belongings are well-protected, here are three steps you should take now that the weather is warming up.
Inspect for Pest Activity
Now that the weather is warming up, the pests will start coming out of hiding. Unfortunately, they'll probably be heading for your storage unit. Not only that, but you may be getting new storage neighbors, and you never know what kind of pests they'll be bringing with them. To avoid pest damage, now's the time to inspect your storage unit for pest activity. You'll want to check for any signs of rodent droppings, or chew marks on your boxes. If you see either of those signs, you'll need to take evasive action quickly. Clean your storage unit, and place some traps as well. It's also a good idea to sprinkle coffee grounds in your storage unit; the odor will repel mice and roaches.
Check for Load Shifting
If it's been a while since you checked on your storage unit, you'll want to check your belongings for load shifting. Over time, the belongings you have in boxes and containers can move and settle, which can cause the load to shift; when that happens, your boxes and containers can collapse. To make sure that doesn't happen, it's a good idea to check for shifting. It's also a good idea to move things around once in a while. This will take some of the pressure off the items you have on the bottom of the heap.
Test for Moisture Problems
You might not know this from doing a quick peek, but you could have a moisture problem in your storage unit. If you do, your delicate items like photographs, paperwork, and clothing could be at risk for damage. Now that spring is here, it's time to test your storage unit for moisture problems. Place several strips of aluminum foil on the metal walls in your storage unit. Secure them with a bit of tape. Close the storage unit and leave it alone for a couple of days. When you return, remove the aluminum foil and check for moisture. If there's moisture build up, place a bucket of charcoal in your storage unit. The charcoal will help absorb excess moisture.
